International air freight from Malaysia: how to get space and a fair rate

When cargo has to fly, two things decide how well it goes: whether your forwarder can actually get space on the flight you need, and whether the price you pay reflects the shipment rather than a standard markup. This page explains how both work, and how we handle air freight in and out of Malaysia.

What we fly

We handle international air freight both directions — exports out of Malaysia to destinations worldwide, and imports into Malaysia, where we run air import clearance at KLIA daily. Cargo ranges from a single urgent carton to full pallet consignments, whether it flies in the belly of a passenger aircraft or on a dedicated freighter.

Air freight from Malaysia connects through KLIA to the major hubs, and from there to effectively any airport in the world. Where a destination has no direct service, cargo moves on a routing through a connecting hub — a normal part of air freight, and something we plan into the quote rather than something you discover later.

How we get space: airline GSA partnerships

Airlines sell most of their cargo space through general sales agents (GSAs) — the companies that manage cargo capacity on the airline's behalf in each market. We hold partnership agreements with major airline GSAs, which gives us priority uplift and competitive rates on the space we book.

In practical terms: when flights are full and cargo is queuing, a forwarder with GSA relationships gets cargo confirmed while a forwarder without them gets waitlisted. Most weeks that difference is invisible. In peak season, or when your shipment has a date it cannot miss, it is the whole game.

How air freight is priced

Air freight is priced on chargeable weight — the higher of the actual weight on the scale and the volumetric weight, which converts the shipment's size into an equivalent weight. A light but bulky shipment is charged on the space it takes up; a dense one on what it weighs.

This means two shipments with the same scale weight can be quoted very differently. Before comparing quotes from anyone, have the dimensions measured — length, width, height, per piece — so every quote is priced on the same chargeable weight. Send us dimensions and weight together and the quote comes back faster and holds up better.

The export process, briefly

For an export, we book the space, collect the cargo, prepare the air waybill and export documentation, lodge the export declaration with Customs, and hand the cargo in at the terminal ahead of the flight's cut-off. You get the AWB and tracking; the consignee gets the cargo.

Two things keep an export on its booked flight: cargo ready when the truck arrives, and documents complete before the cut-off. Both are set days earlier, at booking — which is why we ask detailed questions upfront rather than discovering problems at the terminal.

The import side
